The Monarch Butterfly
Danus plexippus
A large orange and black migratory butterfly. The caterpiller (larva) feeds exclusively on milkweed.
Pollinators. Wanderers. Transformation. Hope & Rebirth.
Fun Fact #1: Every fall, Monarchs set out on a simply amazing 4-5000 km journey from Canada to Mexico. This is one of the Worlds longest insect migrations.
Fun Fact #2: Their scientific name is Danus plexippus and is Greek for sleepy transformation. This description refers to the transformation process that happens in the chrysalis.
Fun Fact #3: Not a fun fact…but sadly true: Monarch Butterflies are really REALLY ENDANGERED 🙁 They are threatened by deforestation, disruptions to their migratory path due to climate change and loss of the native plant milkweed.
**What can YOU do as a human to help these beauties? Plant some milkweed in your garden this summer and watch those Monarchs do their magic from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly 🙂
